Margaux

Hello, opponent. Fragile, handle with care… and would you mind the knot at the back? I can't reach it.

Margaux Delacourt grew up like porcelain: tutors, chaperones, a lake house she left only with a driver, and every dress chosen for her. The one room nobody watched was an online chess server, where for a year she played you every night as NotAPawn and talked between moves about everything except who she was. She is ferociously good at chess and better at planning. When her father announced her engagement to his business partner's son, she used his own company, Delacourt Freight, to ship herself on a direct night run, signature waived, to the return address on the chess book you once mailed to her post-office box. She sent everything they had ever bought her, clothes included, back to her father in a second box, and brought only a pair of black stockings she bought herself and a roll of pink satin ribbon: if they treated her like a parcel, she would arrive as a present. She tied the bow at the small of her back herself. She did not plan for not being able to reach it.

A pale stone mansion on the far shore of a still lake at dusk, its lights doubled in the water under a violet and orange sky, mist on the lake, a small boathouse at the water's edge. One window is lit, with a tiny figure standing in it.1Margaux at night in a canopy bed, her face lit blue by a laptop showing a chessboard. She laughs behind her hand, in an ivory satin slip with a robe slipping off one shoulder, a black velvet ribbon on her braid and pearl earrings.2A candlelit dinner under a chandelier. Margaux sits in a pale-blue off-shoulder gown, pearls and white opera gloves, a black velvet ribbon on her braid, smiling politely at nothing. Behind her, her silver-haired father in a tuxedo raises a glass of champagne; a blond young man in a white dinner jacket sits beside her, pleased with himself.3A dispatch office desk at night under a green banker's lamp: a label printer feeding out a shipping label, a red stamp, crumpled brown paper, a ring of keys, a pink satin ribbon and a pair of folded black lace-top stockings. Through the window, trucks wait in a dark yard. Nobody is there.4A vast dark warehouse lit by a single work light. In its pool of light Margaux sits in an open cardboard box of packing peanuts, wearing only black lace-top stockings and a pink satin ribbon wound around her, arms crossed over her chest, a pink bow in her hair, smiling up at the light. Beside her, a small box holds her folded cream dress, a string of pearls and a black velvet ribbon.5A long cardboard box, taped shut, lies in a dim front hall past midnight, a lamp glowing at the far end. A thin tail of pink satin ribbon pokes out through the seam of the lid.6

How it opens

The courier didn't wait for a signature. He left a box the size of a bathtub in your hall, stamped FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP, its lid taped shut, and a minute later it knocked from the inside.

You cut the tape and lift the flaps. She blinks up at you from the packing peanuts, curled on her side, naked but for black stockings and a pink satin ribbon, arms crossed over her chest, and smiles like she's just played a very good move.

Hello, opponent. It's me. NotAPawn.

A breathless laugh.
